Shotaro began his career in sales at a major pharmaceutical company. Over time, his interest in HR grew, prompting him to pursue a graduate degree in HR management overseas. After returning to Japan, he supported international students with job placement at an education-focused consultancy. He joined BRS in 2021 and now leads a healthcare-specialized team as a Senior Manager.

What motivated you to transition from a sales role in the pharmaceutical industry to becoming a recruiter?

While working in sales, I realized that regardless of the product or company, the foundation for creating value always comes down to "people." This insight sparked my interest in human resources. I pursued a graduate degree in Human Resource Management abroad and gained experience helping international students find jobs.

As I gained more experience in the people-focused field, I found that a career in recruitment aligned perfectly with both my skills and interests, which led me to make the switch.

What attracted you to BRS?

What stood out to me about BRS was the flexible approach to work, where each person’s unique style and ideas are respected. Since recruiting is a people-focused job, there are many different ways to achieve results, and BRS encourages autonomy to explore these options.

I also appreciate that the environment fosters individual initiative while providing the right level of support and guidance from managers and directors.

What has your experience as a recruiter been like?

Since becoming a recruiter, I’ve gained a more well-rounded perspective on the life sciences industry. In my previous sales role, my focus was mainly on the products I was working with, but now I need to have a broader understanding to meet the diverse needs of clients.

This has deepened my own knowledge and keeps me engaged as I’m constantly exposed to new information. It’s a role that never feels repetitive.

You are currently managing a team in the life sciences sector while also handling client relations. Can you share more about your role?

Yes, I manage a team of eight multinational members. At BRS, the role of a manager goes beyond just chasing numbers. It requires developing sales strategies based on industry trends, allocating the right opportunities to team members, and making flexible, strategic decisions.

I find it rewarding how my decisions and efforts can directly influence both the team's performance and its atmosphere. While I entrust my team with their daily tasks, I also step in to support client interactions when needed. I strive to be a reliable resource for both our clients and my team, someone they can count on whenever they need assistance.

How do you feel about your current team?

Our team has a great dynamic where everyone understands their role and what they need to focus on, yet we also naturally help each other out when someone is in need. There’s a deep-rooted culture of teamwork, and whenever a candidate receives an offer, we all celebrate together.  This teamwork is one of BRS's unique strengths, and it's something I want to continue nurturing.

Additionally, being part of a multinational team allows me to experience diverse perspectives and communication styles on a daily basis. The differences within our team provide fresh insights and new perspectives for each of us, which is one of the great benefits of working in an international environment.

What do you consider important when supporting the growth of your team members?

I want each team member to find their own sense of fulfillment and enjoyment in their work. Rather than enforcing a rigid way of doing things, I try to respect each person’s unique approach and creativity.

Whether it’s delivering great consulting or building trusted relationships, I hope they can experience moments of genuine satisfaction in their own way. My focus is always on how I can best support them on that journey.

What are your goals as a manager moving forward?

My goal is to build a team that becomes the top choice for recruitment in the life sciences and healthcare sectors. To achieve that, each team member needs to think about how we can earn and maintain trust—both from clients in the industry and the candidates we support.

I believe creating a culture where everyone takes responsibility and acts with this mindset is key. Personally, I want to focus on the long-term impact of our work, not just short-term results. By sharing this perspective with my team, I hope to build a sustainable system that consistently delivers high-quality service.

Do you have a message for those interested in BRS?

At BRS, we offer a supportive environment that's perfect for those new to the recruitment industry. Recruiting is an exciting field where you can find your own approach, and it's incredibly rewarding to contribute to someone's career development. If you're even a little curious, I encourage you to take that first step.

Additionally, PERSOL CAREER is committed to reducing overtime across the company, and I personally make sure our team members can achieve results during regular working hours. It’s an ideal workplace for anyone who values both professional growth and a healthy work-life balance.
