Responsibilities
  • Provide regulatory guidance and oversight to company on import/export and Customs issues;
  • Manage policies and procedures to be adopted and implemented by Customs brokers and trading companies involved in their’import and export operations;
  • Provide support and expertise to colleagues on global trade-related litigation, compliance investigations, and voluntary disclosures;
  • Support oversight and implementation of periodic assessments and audits to guarantee compliance with applicable global, regional and national trade law requirements and company policies and affirm internal controls in areas including but not limited to classification, recordkeeping, valuation, origin, licensing, etc. and implementation of any necessary corrective actions to any audit findings;
  • Prepare required summaries and work with various business units and their Regions to resolve compliance matters, as well as government filings when necessary;
  • Provide day-to-day oversight of and strategic leadership in identifying issues, developing globally integrated solutions and recommendations to Senior Management in ensuring that compliance operational processes align with business objectives.
  • Develop and manage an internal assessment and audit program with colleagues globally that complies with all applicable regulations, including collaboration with Internal Audit and external auditors as needed.
  • Initiate, monitor and resolve all activity in accordance with client instruction, regulatory requirements and ensure timely submissions and associated tracking through final closure.
  • Coordinate regional and global internal assessments of the Company’s trade compliance activities.
  • Drive change and process improvement in the Company’s Global Trade Compliance.
  • Work with customs brokers, regulatory agents, Legal, and trade compliance consultants to resolve related issues by clarifying questions and recommending solutions.
  • Ensure global requirements related to training is implemented.
  • Ensure that Head of Global Trade Compliance and Japan General Counsel are regularly consulted and informed about trade compliance issues and activities, and ensure effective collaboration with members in Legal and Supply Chain Trade Compliance functions
  • Perform all other essential duties as assigned
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s / master’s degree in business administration / operations / SCM or law (JD from nationally accredited law school)
  • Language:Written and oral in Japanese and English
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative work style, anticipate problems, succeed in resolving difficult situations and effectively communicate with all levels of stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and proactively, with minimal guidance and supervision
  • Strong aptitude for understanding and analyzing large volumes of information from multiple sources
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously with a high level of urgency
  • At least 10 years’ experience directly related to Japanese or Global export/import licensing, customs regulations, and trade compliance management
  • Experience in HTS classification issues, including resolution mechanisms, freight forwarding, and broker management
  • Familiarity with Japan’s EPA/GSP regulations and the ability to provide guidance for qualification analyses as needed
  • Familiarity with Japanese METI export control laws and regulations
  • Availability to travel domestically and internationally
  • Experience working in trade compliance functions for a multinational corporation
